What is Breast Augmentation?

Augmentation mammoplasty, or breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size, shape or fullness of a woman's breasts.Silicone or saline breast implants are placed under the chest muscles or breast tissue.

Why is a Breast Augmentation Required?

Breast augmentation is done to:

➞ Enlarge breasts that are naturally small.

➞ Restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding.

➞ Restore symmetry when the breasts are asymmetrical

➞ Restore the breast(s) after surgery as treatment for breast cancer or some other condition or event that affected the size and shape of the breast.

How is the procedure done?

The procedure is done under Local or General Anaesthesia, however, General is preferred over the Local Anaesthesia. Incisions are made on or near the breast in a minimally visible area to maintain cosmetic appearance. Breast Implants are placed either below the Pectoralis Muscle or directly below the breast tissue. The incised area is sutured aesthetically to achieve minimal scarring.

What are Breast Implants?

A breast implant is a medical prosthesis that is placed inside the breast to augment, reconstruct or create the physical form of the breast. The outer layer of breast implants is made of firm silicone. The inside of the implant is filled either with salt water (saline solution), silicone gel, or a composite of alternative substances. There are 2 main types of breast implants:

Saline Implants

➞ These implants can be filled with different amounts of saline solution, which may affect the feel, firmness and shape of the breast.

Silicone Implants

➞ filled with a viscous silicone gel which is held within an elastomer silicone shell.

Recovery After Breast Implantation

The breasts are covered with gauze after the surgery for a few days. You may need to wear a surgical bra as you heal.

You'll need to take it easy for a few days after your breast augmentation surgery. For instance, you shouldn't do any heavy lifting for up to six weeks after getting your implants.

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen may help relieve discomfort.

You will probably have some swelling in the area where the surgery was done. Over time, the swelling should ease and the scars will fade.
