Past, Present and Future of Hair Transplant

It is often said, ”Invest in your hair; it is the crown you never take off!” Yes, it is the crown that we always have with us, no matter, whether the polls and trolls are in our favor or not! Well, let’s face it, majority of the population love this crown of theirs and do not want to compromise with it under any scenario. But, life can be unfair at times, and when it comes to hair, most of the times it is. Even at a younger age people start losing their hair, which not only creates an imbalance with their physical appearance, but also meddles with their confidence. There are many solutions to hair loss, but the ultimate solution is Hair Transplant.

Let’s take a walk in the past of Hair Transplant

If we date back to the history of hair transplant, the free grafts began in the nineteenth century. Initially it was done to replace damaged areas of eyebrows and eyelashes. Punch Grafting is the procedure that was adopted by the doctors from 1955 to 1990 for hair transplant. Punch grafting started with experimenting free donor grafts to the balding areas. The problem with Punch Grafting was that, it never brought about an appearance as of a “natural hair.” It was famous for its “doll like appearance.” Even with certain flaws there are still some places that use punch grafting till date!

With the advent of FUT, hair transplant has got a whole new definition. In Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), one strip of hair bearing skin is extracted and going on, it is further dissected to produce individual grafts.

Talking of the Present

The revolutionary change in Hair Transplant was brought about by Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In FUE, individual follicle units containing 1 to 4 hair strands are removed. Tiny recipient sites are made in the balding area and the follicular units are placed into the recipient sites.Biostimulated FUE involves FUE, as well as it also comprises of 3 to 6 sessions of platelet rich plasma (PRP)therapy which enhances the residual hair by the stimulation of the stem cells. It involves minimal incisions and does not leave any mark. Biostimulated FUE PRP is the best therapy in present day hair transplant. It is fast, better and has the most natural or exact natural hair like results. In fact the recovery time is the fastest too! The challenge with FUE is that it requires skilled expertise in this area and is an overall learning experience.

These days oral medication is also available for hair transplant, medicines like Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia) is used for hair retainment and growth.

Talking of present day hair transplant, these days Laser Therapy is also used. In this therapy, low level laser is used on the person’s scalp to stimulate hair growth. Even stem cell therapy for hair transplant is available.

What does the future hold for hair transplant?

But this is not just it; Hair Transplant has great new advancements to look forward to in the future too. Various techniques like Computerized Implantation, Reverse Medication and Gene Therapy are the talks of the future.

Computerized implantation as the name suggests is future scope in which hair transplant would be computerized. The hair follicles would be cultured in labs and then would be implanted. If this comes true, it would a lot of time and would also give most precise results of hair transplant.

Another most researched aspect in the future of hair transplant is Reverse Medication. Though Minoxidil and Finasteride are being used these days for hair loss, but efforts are being made to provide medication which could reverse hair loss completely and have much greater results than the present day.

One of the most advanced and most awaited techniques of future for hair transplant is Gene Therapy. It involves identifying the gene responsible for hair loss and modifying the genes in such a way that they do not cause hair loss, and stimulate growth as well.

After the glimpse on the past, present and future of hair transplant, all we can conclude is that, “baldness is not inevitable, it can very well be treated.” So, if you are going bald, and that to not by choice, there are various options to choose from in today’s scenario. Keep your crown intact!
